In India there is still a lot of significance and importance awarded for a girl to become a mom, but even that is gradually changing in the urban set-up where couples opt out from having a baby. But, is it also true for western cultures?

I guess being a good parent is more important that just bearing a kid... in cultures like India with our cast and class issues, adoption just isn’t accepted...

which is a shame because I know quite a few couples who have had trouble having a baby and would have loved to adopt had their families not threatened to not recognize the adopted child!!

@Asmita, I don’t agree with you when you say that adoption is not accepted in India. It is gradually changing in India also, esp in the urban setup. I personally know of 3 friends in my immediate friend circle who have gone in for adoption and are extremely happy about it.

I certainly know that childless woman are discriminated to a large extent in India, but it comes as a shocker that this happens worldwide also which also leads to marital breakdown! Motherhood is a complicated, and truly important issue, and understandably a major focus point for many, but judging someone on these grounds is highly moronic!

The society is changing gradually but women need to understand that it is their life and they shouldn’t let outside factors get to them. In today’s age if a couple can’t have kid they immediately file in for adoption and lead a happy life! Also there are cases where women choose not to have children. Society as a whole does not value these reasons, but does an individual really need to care about such petty things? Fighting societal norms is not easy but every one of us needs to realize that this is an extremely personal issue and when others make it their business, the best thing to do is to ignore!
